“Dementia Friends” is a grassroots program started in the UK and has spread worldwide, including the US. Washington State is fairly new to the program and is sponsored by the University of WA. Dementia Friends is unique in that it involves every day non-medical people teaching about what is and what is not dementia and how it impacts quality of life. The idea is that everyone in the community will be educated about what dementia is, what to expect and how to communicate with someone affected by dementia. “Dementia-friendly communities” involve local government and businesses to help those affected by dementia not only through educating front line staff but also making the environment dementia-friendly to shop and get services to get their needs met in their communities.
1.5 hours of CE are available to all AFH Council members who attend.
