Specialty Drugs-Ramifications for Caregivers
Specialty drugs are those that have restricted or limited distribution pathways either due to cost or handling/packaging issues. They may or may not be available from a traditional pharmacy supplier (including those of us servicing AFHs). They are more often than not very expensive products. They become a bugaboo for caregivers/homeowners since they need to be ordered from an alternative vendor in many cases.
Additionally, different insurance payers may have different “specialty” lists depending upon contractual relationships between product manufacturer and payer, so it’s almost impossible to keep close tabs on what different programs may entail.
