Presentation:  Molecular UTI Testing Using Modern Technology presented by Dawn Kuipers, RDH, BS Senior Regional Sales Manager with Fidalab

UTI is the most common bacterial infection and major cause of morbidity US. The elderly are particularly susceptible with potential dire consequences including hospital admission, fall, urosepsis, and death. The current gold standard diagnostic test for UTI is conventional urine culture which suffers from suboptimal test sensitivity and lengthy test time (3-5 days). In contrast, the new nucleic acid amplification-based assay (quantitative PCR) offers urinary tract pathogen identification and antibiotic resistance pattern within 24 hours with an extremely high test accuracy. In addition, PCR test brings in such practical conveniences as in-house collection of urine samples without the need of sending the patients out to hospital or of being catheterized and non-interference from antibiotic that patient is already on. All these contribute to better management of UTI cases in your facility
