What is an NPI Number and Do I Need One?
When completing contracts with a Managed Care Organization (MCO) for Community Behavioral Health Support (CBHS) services, a section of the application asks that providers add their NPI number. If you’re not sure what that is or whether you need one, you’re in the right place!
What is an NPI Number?
An NPI number is a unique 10-digit identification number assigned to health care providers. It is used in administrative and financial transactions by health care providers, health plans, and clearinghouses.
Do AFH Providers Need an NPI Number?
The Health Care Authority has confirmed that AFH providers do not need an NPI number to complete contracts with an MCO.
Instead, AFH providers are assigned an Atypical Provider ID (API) number in the ProviderOne Application. This API number is your unique identifier for billing Medicaid.
I've Been Told the NPI Number is Required. What do I do?
When an MCO says an NPI number is required, they are referring to the API number assigned to you. The term “NPI” may be used to cover both types of identification numbers. Rest assured, you will only need your API number.
If you do not have your API number yet, you will need to complete the ProviderOne application.
Please reach out to the Health Care Authority at hca1915iservices@hca.wa.gov to be guided through the process and obtain your API.
