Wildfires and smoke are affecting communities across Washington—not only the Spokane area. Adult family home providers should monitor changing conditions, prepare for possible evacuation, and protect residents and staff from unhealthy air.

Track fires and emergency conditions:

Fire-tracking maps are useful for situational awareness, but conditions can change rapidly. Always follow evacuation orders and instructions from your local sheriff, fire department or emergency management agency.

Monitor smoke and air quality:

When air quality is unhealthy:

• Keep doors and windows closed when temperatures allow.
• Use air conditioning on recirculate and portable air cleaners when available.
• Limit outdoor activity, especially for residents with heart or lung conditions.
• Use a properly fitted N95 respirator if outdoor activity cannot be avoided. Cloth masks do not protect against wildfire smoke.
• Seek medical attention for serious symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing.

If an adult family home evacuates, providers must also report the evacuation through the RCS Online Incident Reporting system or call Residential Care Services at 1-800-562-6078.
