Adult Family Homes Unfairly Targeted by City of Lakewood’s Proposed Ordinances

John Ficker addressing the Lakewood Planning Commission

The city of Lakewood has made several proposals to restrict the development of Adult Family Homes. These new proposals include:

  • 500 or 1,000 foot perimeter between any two adult family homes
  • Public comment period prior to allowing licensure
  • Restrictions on which residents can be admitted
  • Minimum wage requirements targeted only at adult family home jobs

The Adult Family Home Council has met several times with the city to express our concerns about these proposals.  Similar proposals to restrict where adult family homes can be developed have been considered by the courts a violation of the Americans with Disability Act, a violation of fair housing standards, and a violation of the rights of property owners.  The AFH Council hopes that future meetings between city officials, Lakewood residents, AFH operators, and DSHS will result in the city modifying or abandoning these proposals. Upcoming study sessions on March 26th and a City Council meeting on April 2nd will be the next dates to monitor how the city proceeds with their proposals.
